OG&E Introduces Midwest City And Del City To The Smart Grid

August 17, 2011

Smart meter installation begins this week

OKLAHOMA CITY –The advantages of smart grid technology are coming to Midwest City and Del City as OG&E begins to install smart meters on homes and businesses throughout the two communities.

Since the smart grid program began in February 2010, OG&E has installed more than 340,000 smart meters in its territory, including Moore, Norman and parts of Oklahoma City. Almost 800,000 of the new meters are planned for installation by December 2012, completing the process for OG&E’s entire service territory.

“As we continue installation of smart meters, we hope the technology encourages our customers to learn more about their energy use,” said Ken Grant, Managing Director Smart Grid.

Once a smart meter is installed, Grant said customers have access to the personalized energy information website myOGEpower, allowing them to view their electricity use and price information online and better manage their energy costs.

OG&E smart meter customers can sign up for the freeonline service at www.oge.com/myogepower.  A special call center also is available at 855-291-6304 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays to help with enrollments.

In addition to the smart meters, other smart grid equipment is being installed on the OG&E electric system to further improve power reliability.

Smart meter installation:

  • Customers do not need to be present for the smart meter installation unless access to the meter is limited.
  • An OG&E employee or approved contractor will perform the meter upgrade. The work usually takes less than 10 minutes. Installers carry identification and do not need to enter a home or business except in those limited cases where the meter is inside.
  • Most homes will experience a momentary interruption to electric service, which could require digital displays like appliance clocks to be reset. If OG&E personnel are unable to access a meter, a door hanger will be left with instructions to contact the company.

Questions about the smart meter installation can be directed to OG&E’s call center from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays at 272-9741 in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area or toll-free at 1-800-272-9741.  More information about OG&E’s Smart Grid program is available at www.oge.com.
