80-turbine Harper County facility one of few owned and operated by a utility

OKLAHOMA CITY, April 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- OG&E Electric Services' Centennial Wind Farm near Fort Supply will be dedicated April 20, formally recognizing the 80-turbine facility's addition to the electric power grid and more than tripling the company's production of clean, renewable wind energy.

Centennial, approved by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission in April 2006, uses the latest wind-generation technology and is dedicated exclusively to OG&E customers.

The project's mammoth turbines -- each structure's tallest blade reaching nearly the height of a 40-story building and rated at 1.5 megawatts -- can produce a total of 120 megawatts of power. That is enough electricity to supply about 36,000 homes. Together with the 50 megawatts OG&E obtained in 2003 through a long-term contract with developers of a nearby wind farm, the company now has 170 megawatts of wind-generated capacity -- enough for more than 50,000 homes.

The Centennial project is one of the largest wind farms in Oklahoma. It is easily visible from U.S. 183 northwest of Fort Supply. The new wind farm features an array of 80 General Electric turbines, each standing 262 feet tall at its hub. Since the three-blade rotor assembly connected to the hub is 252 feet in diameter, the total height of the structure is 388 feet.

The turbines are computer-controlled, operating in winds ranging from 7 to 55 mph, with peak performance at about 25 mph. For safety, the turbines automatically shut down if wind speeds exceed 55 mph. A shaft extending from the three rotating blades drives a generator, converting mechanical motion into electric power.

OG&E is making wind energy from the new Centennial project available to all OG&E customers rather than using a subscriber-based program. About 10,000 OG&E customers subscribed to wind energy from the company's turbines at the Sooner Wind Farm near Woodward. That program was recognized this month as one of the Top 10 "Green Power" programs in the country by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

OG&E serves more than 755,000 customers in a service area spanning 30,000 square miles in Oklahoma and western Arkansas. The company has electric generating capacity of 6,220 megawatts from eight power plants and two wind farms.
