OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 18, 2022) - For the second year in a row, OG&E is observing a Week of Service by partnering with 44 classrooms in 29 schools across its service area to share the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with 885 students.

During the 2022 MLK Week of Service, Jan. 16-23, 90 OG&E employee volunteers will read virtually to first graders across the OG&E service area. This year, employees and students will share in “Martin Luther King Jr.,” written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara.

“OG&E is committed to service and continues to find ways to serve our community amid these challenging times,” said Sean Trauschke, Chairman, President and CEO of OGE Energy Corp. “Kicking off the new year with our Week of Service helps keep the importance of service to others top of mind throughout the year. I am proud of the ways our company strives to volunteer safely, support our communities and schools, and honor Dr. King’s legacy of equity, unity and service.”

Rose Royal, OG&E’s Director of Ethics, Equity & Inclusion read to first graders at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

“I love sharing inspiring stories like Dr. King’s with the next generation. It’s an opportunity to connect and underscore his incredible legacy. Dr. King committed to peacefully bringing about change in the world. He demonstrated that you don’t have to be violent to effect change, which is an enduring lesson,” said Royal. “Giving back and serving our community in these ways is the perfect way to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose legacy teaches all of us what it means to serve others and how to stand up for what is right in a respectful way.”

Each school that signed up for the event will receive a hard copy of the book for their school library. In addition to the virtual readings, members of the OG&E Black TOGETHER resource group participated in the Oklahoma City MLK Jr.’s Holiday Parade.

OG&E is committed to serving the communities in its service area. In 2021, OG&E employees volunteered 10,000 hours across Oklahoma and western Arkansas.
